In modern times, the distractions and entertainments of the world captivate the senses and keep the soul in a state of sleep. To awaken the soul, one must turn to the Church and immerse oneself in the life of prayer and repentance.

Finally, become strong in the Lord and in the might of his strength. Put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the stratagems of the devil, because our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
- St Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians, 6:10-12 (Lexham English Bible translation)
☦️
"We must wage war against the noetic and unseen princes and powers, the demons," Paul insists. ... The Apostle applies the name "world rulers" to the demons, not because they control and exercise power over the world—far from it! In the holy Scriptures the world "world" is often used in reference to wicked and evil deeds, and to evil men who practice such deeds. This is why the Lord said to His disciples, "Ye are not of this world" (John 15:19), which means, "You are not numbered among those who practice evil deeds, and who are concerned only about the affairs of this world." But the demons control both evil deeds and worldly minded men, who are willing to enslave themselves to the demons. ... With these words, Paul once again stirs the Christians to action: "Do not imagine that the demons wage war against us, and we against them, over earthly trifles. No, we do battle for the heavenly, for the incorruptible and inexpressibly good things of the kingdom of God." ... The meaning is this: "Our war against the demons is in defense of, and for the sake of, [our access to] the heavenly realms. Therefore, may we also gain the god things of heaven, and not be deprived of them."
