The end of the world is inseparable from what it means to love, and to be loved.
The Church, the Body of Christ and the Bride of Christ, has been living in the last days for 2000 years. From the Final Exam lovingly provided in advance by the Lord Himself (the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats in Matthew 25:31-46), to St Peter's warning that "the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer" (1 Peter 4:7), to the fulfillment of the Lord's prophecy of the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD, to the numerous other rehearsals for the end of the world throughout all of Christian history and the earth soaked red with the blood of millions of martyrs: there is no group of human beings better prepared for the end of the world.
I don’t mean preparedness in terms of self-sufficiency, but rather its complete opposite: preparedness by living out complete and total dependence on God.
St Theophan the Recluse says, counterintuitively: “whoever relies on something and is attached to something is rich in that thing.” Thus to rely on transient things is to be “rich” in them, which is the same as saying one is impoverished in the things of eternity. But to be “rich” in the things of eternity means to live with near-total dependence on them. To be rich in God is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matt. 22:37).
Consequently, to be rich in God is to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:39), hence the points of examination when He returns:
“I was hungry and you gave Me food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me;
I was sick and you visited Me;
I was in prison and you came to Me.” (Matt. 25:31-36)
To be a son or daughter of the end of the world means to be a son or a daughter to every human being one meets, or their father or mother, or sister or brother.
